Why pay per click does not work
So I finished another semester of school last night, we had an intense 4 team acquisition of a fictional company called Epi-Tel. So now that school is over for a few weeks I am going to post a lot more.
While I have been doing school work I have been thinking a lot about how to best grow this blog and make some money. I am almost 100% convinced that Ads are not the way to go. The whole point of having a website is to keep people at your site because you are either selling something, have something to say, or any number of other reasons but the bottom line is that you want people to be at your site. As soon as you put ads up your are giving your visitor a reason to leave and when they leave they may never come back. But you maybe made $.25 if your lucky and I mean lucky you made more.
I guess there are three types of ads you can run pay per click, pay per impression and spontise (sponsors who advertise, yes I just made that up). So if you are running pay per click and someone clicks on your ad unless they open a new window they are gone and probably will not come back. By clicking you made a short-term gain and possibly gave up a long term reader, what's more valuable? Pay per impression is better at least people stick around but you need to have some serious traffic to make any money. This blog is not even close to that, 3-4 visitors per day (again if I am lucky) doesn't add up to much over time with out scalability. Finally spontise which is sort of like pay per impression but as long as you meet the traffic requirements people will pay you to keep their ad on your site. Again this is money if you have big traffic but it is still fundamentally flawed since you are offering to give people the option of leaving. Not a great idea.
Again I am not expert on this stuff but this is what has been going through my mind. So I am in the process of attempting to brand this site, maybe I can intrigue people to stay around that way. Stay tuned for more and coming soon an IAMOKRUOK logo which will be step one of the brand.
